The Bottom Line
Home / Medicare Basics /
Too long, didn’t read? The bottom line is:
- Every American must have creditable health care coverage. Most people aged 65 and older are eligible for Medicare. If eligible, they must have Medicare’s Part A, Part B, and prescription drug coverage. “Original Medicare” itself is often not enough coverage.
- Not enrolling in coverage can result in delays and/or penalties.
- Medicare Advantage (also known as Medicare Part C) plans may cost less per month compared to Medicare Supplements (also known as MediGap), but out of pocket costs while receiving care may be higher under a Medicare Advantage plan compared to a Medicare Supplement plan.
- Medicare Supplement plans allow clients to spread their financial costs over the year, through paying their monthly premiums. Most services cost the beneficiary nothing! Also, Supplement plans are accepted nationwide by any doctor who accepts Original Medicare. Medicare Supplement plans do not require referrals to see Specialists.
