Administered and created by the United States federal government, Medicare is a national insurance program that Americans may become eligible for at age 65 (see more information on eligibility here). Today, Medicare covers the health needs of more than 48 million Americans. The government agency which administers Medicare, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), contracts with private insurance companies to ensure Members’ medical services are covered and that physicians are reimbursed for their services.

CMS also collaborates closely with the Social Security Administration to ensure Medicare benefits are provided to those eligible. Contact information for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Social Security Administration can be found at our Medicare Help Desk.
