Fun Facts About Halloween
Have you heard of “The Pumpkin Rule”? In August of 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal government branch that oversees and administers Medicare, proposed a rule changing the way patients could be admitted into the hospital. Patients expected to spend more than two midnights at the hospital, under the proposed law, must be admitted as “inpatient” rather than for “observation”. This was quickly given the nickname, “The Pumpkin Rule”, due to its Cinderella-esque qualities. The rule was postponed several times since 2013 and has since been dropped and is not enforced. But we sure love the nickname!
What’s more Irish than St. Patrick’s Day? Halloween, actually! The origins of Halloween come from a Celtic festival called “Samhain”. The Celtic people believed the ghosts of the dead roamed on “Samhain”, people would leave treats out on their front doors to please the spirits and would dress in costume to appease them as well. Learn more about the history of Samhain on About.com.
Have you ever tried carving a turnip, beet, or potato? The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from these root vegetables instead of pumpkins. During the potato famine in the mid 19th century the Irish fled to Canada and the United States, bringing along the tradition of Halloween or “Samhain”. They couldn’t find their usual produce to carve so they opted for pumpkins and gourds, plentiful in North America. Invite your grandchildren to carve beets and turnips with you and watch their reactions! Learn more about the history of pumpkins vs. turnips on LiveScience.com.
Candy Corn has been an incredibly popular treat during the Halloween season. In fact, more than 35 million pounds of candy corn are produced each year. The candy was brought into production by the Herman Goeltiz Confectionary Company of Fairfield, California now known as the Jelly Belly Candy Company. Originally it was invented in the 1880s by a candy maker at the Wunderlee Candy Company in Philadelphia. Learn more about the history of candy corn on Bhg.com.
Do you know any Halloween superstitions? A favorite one involves wearing your clothes inside out and walking backwards. The tale goes, if you performed this act you’d see a witch at midnight. Light a candle inside a Jack O’Lantern on Halloween and keep evil spirits and demons away. If a bat flies around your house three times, it’s said to be a death omen. A person born on Halloween can see and talk to spirits. These are just a few of the common superstitions, and you can learn about more on theholidayspot.com. History.com put together an amazing Infographic highliting some startling numbers about Halloween. Did you know that nearly 46% of American adults carve a pumpkin each year? Or how about the fact that U.S. growers produce over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins each year. Over 10% of Americans dress up their pets for Halloween and as many as 72% of Americans hand out candy. Speaking of pets on Halloween… I am crazy about my dog and love to dress him in costume (don’t judge!). Here he is with this year’s costume: spaghetti and meatballs.
